Studies of Our Faculty Members on Ovarian Cancer Accepted as TÜBİTAK-3501 Project

Faculty members of our university are preparing to take a big step with their research in the field of ovarian cancer. The project, accepted by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) within the scope of TÜBİTAK-3501, will open the door to promising new approaches to the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Within the scope of TÜBİTAK-3501 Project, which has a budget of 586,323.47 TL, one of our university faculty members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Eşref Alkış serves as the coordinator, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nevin Turan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kenan Buldurun, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Savcıand Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yusuf Alan are researchers.

“With the new treatment techniques to be developed, it is aimed to increase the life expectancy and life quality of patients”

Project manager Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Eşref ALKIŞ made a statement regarding the aim of the project, “Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer in women and the deadliest of gynecological malignant tumors. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates that the number of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer will have increased by 47% by 2040. However, due to the resistance of ovarian cancer to chemotherapy and heterogeneity at the cellular level, the desired success in treatment cannot be achieved. For these reasons, it has become an indispensable need to develop new and powerful drugs with low side effects and new treatment techniques in order to increase the life expectancy and life quality of patients with ovarian cancer. With this study, it is aimed to synthesize new molecules with low cost, increased bioselectivity and anticancer efficiency, and new treatment techniques that can provide effective treatment with low-dose anticancer agent.”
“The interdisciplinary approach to be used in the project will bring a new perspective to traditional methods in the treatment of ovarian cancer”
Emphasizing that the project adopts an interdisciplinary approach, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alkış said, “With this interdisciplinary project, new combined treatment techniques will be investigated for the first time. If these treatment techniques are used in the clinic, low-dose anticancer drugs and low-dose radiation will be treated, and side effects such as hair loss, diarrhea, weakening of the immune system and bleeding will almost not be seen during the treatment process. This will help patients feel better physically and psychologically and accelerate their recovery.”

Congratulating our faculty members who will take part in the project for their work, our university rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alican said, “I see the acceptance of our faculty members' TÜBİTAK project as a reflection of our university's vision in scientific research. This research in the field of ovarian cancer may be an important step towards the development of more effective and patient-oriented treatment methods in the future. Such qualified research has a great potential to positively affect the health and well-being of the society. This success is the result of the efforts of our faculty members who carry the scientific mission of our university. I congratulate them and wish them continued success.”
