"Republic Panel in the Centenary Process" Special for the 100th Anniversary of Our Republic

In these days when we have reached the 100th anniversary of our Republic, a panel was organized by the History Department of our University. The panel, titled "The Republic in a Century-Long Process," commemorated the centenary of our Republic.

The coordination of this panel, which was attended by our Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alican, Vice Rector Yaşar Karadağ, and Rector's Advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özalper, was carried out by Assoc. Prof. Dr. İrşad Sami Yuca, Director of Bulanık Vocational School, a member of the History Department. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özden from Hacettepe University's History Department and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şarika Berber from Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University's History Department were the speakers at this panel, and our University's History Department Chair, Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman, and Research Assistant Gülbin Fırat Onat were also among the panelists.

The "Republic in a Century-Long Process" Panel began with a moment of silence and the national anthem, followed by the opening speech by our Rector, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alican. Rector Alican emphasized the importance of national sovereignty and independence, highlighting the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza and the stance of the international community towards this crisis. Additionally, he expressed his gratitude to those who contributed to this meaningful panel, organized in honor of the History Department Chair, Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman.

Following Rector Alican, Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman, in his presentation, provided information about the historical stages leading from the last century of the Ottoman Empire to the establishment of the Republic. The proclamation of our Republic and the consequences of this challenging process were the main topics discussed by Prof. Duman in the panel.

After Prof. Sabit Duman, another panelist, Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özden, took the floor. Prof. Özden discussed the pre-World War I dynastic states and the regime changes that occurred in these states after the war, comparing them with the regime change in Turkey.

Following Prof. Özden, another panelist, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şarika Berber, delivered a speech on the compatibility of Turkish national culture with the dynamics of the republic. Additionally, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Berber addressed the concepts of ethnic and cultural nationalism within the context of Turkish identity.

After Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şarika Berber, the final panelist, Research Assistant Gülbin Fırat Onat, discussed the modern urbanization efforts in Turkey, focusing on the capital city, Ankara, after the proclamation of the Republic. Dr. Onat's presentation centered on the architectural plans and projects aimed at giving Anatolian cities a modern and European character.

At the end of the panel, a plaque was presented to the History Department Chair, Sabit Duman, by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Yaşar Karadağ, especially for the students of the History Department and students from various other departments who showed great interest in the panel. Following the presentation of participation certificates to the panelists by Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman, all participants and guests took a group photo as a memento.
