Çay Bahane Episode 59: Prof. Dr. Hisao Osada Discusses Gerontology in Japan
In the 59th episode of our Çay Bahane program, we welcomed Prof. Dr. Hisao Osada, a faculty member at Japan’s J.F. Oberlin University.
The event, which attracted significant participation from academic and administrative staff as well as students, focused on the challenges associated with Japan’s aging population and the field of gerontology.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Osada highlighted life expectancy data in Japan, noting that while the average lifespan ranges between 70 and 80 years, only about 70 of those years are spent in good health. He explained that the remaining 10 years often involve a period of dependency on care. He also emphasized the numerous scientific and technological studies conducted within the discipline of gerontology to reduce this dependency.
Osada shared that Japan currently has approximately 4 million dementia patients and discussed the technologies used in caregiving processes. He highlighted the role of machines in assisting with tasks such as lifting bedridden patients and answered questions about the role of robots in caregiving processes.
