A New 4-Year Academic Unit from YÖK to our University
The proposal made by our University to the Council of Higher Education regarding the opening of a School of Foreign Languages was accepted at the General Assembly of Higher Education dated 02.03.2023 and submitted to the Presidency for approval.
The School of Foreign Languages, an undergraduate program, will provide basic language skills to students enrolled in programs whose language of instruction is a foreign language wholly or partially and who do not have sufficient language command. The School of Foreign Languages, which will also undertake the basic language courses at the undergraduate level, provides an effective and high-level foreign language education and it will also provide the organization of international foreign language exams like TOEFL, IELTS, etc. In addition, the School of Foreign Languages will carry out activities such as meeting the foreign language course requests from university members, students and people from outside, organization of international exchange programs, coordination of the MEB-YLSY Scholarship Program.
The School of Foreign Languages will contribute to our city both academically and economically in terms of employment and national-international mobility. It will also be possible for the school to reach students from every academic unit, leading to more international organizations in our city.
Making a statement on the subject, Rector Prof. Dr. Fethi Ahmet Polat said, “There are currently three departments in our university that provide education in Arabic and English, and the departments continue this education with their own limited means. The School of Foreign Languages, which will be implemented with a professional infrastructure, will help students develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and acquire language skills at international standards with an intensive education program that will last for two semesters.
For the last 3 years, we have been making efforts to open this school and taking steps to create its infrastructure. In this context, we recruited academic staff for English education in both the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and opened various departments and programs. We have brought an academic member with the title of professor in this field to our family. We will further strengthen our school with the recruitment of new staff. Hopefully, other official processes will be completed as soon as possible and we will bring our school to a level that will accept students in the coming period.
Since March 15, 2015, when I was appointed as the rector of Muş Alparslan University, a total of 7 departments have been opened together with the School of Foreign Languages.
We opened 4 academic units of 4 years such as Dentistry, Sports Sciences, Applied Sciences, and School of Foreign Languages and 3 academic units of 2 years such as Health Services, Varto and Bulanık Vocational Schools. We transformed our School of Health, which started education under Fırat University, into the Faculty of Health Sciences. Honestly, these are record-breaking developments.
I would like to express my special thanks to Our Chairman of the Council of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar for his support on behalf of our province and university. I would also like to thank the members of the YÖK General Assembly. I would like to express my greatest thanks and gratitude to our President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who provided us with these opportunities, and to our state in his person. Congratulations to our new unit, our university and our city.”
